  • How to keep our toddler in her own bed?

  • Q Our 3-year-old daughter used to sleep through the night until about six weeks ago when she started waking and creeping into our bed. For the first few nights we didn’t mind, but it’s become a habit and the disturbed nights means we’re all tired and cranky the next day. What can we do?

Psychologist Laverne replies: This is a common problem, but if you ignore it, you are giving your daughter the message it's fine for her to be there. Plus, the lack of sleep will take its toll, so it's worth nipping it in the bud now.

You will both need to be firm with your daughter, but it will lead to happier bedtimes for everyone.

First, support each other by taking it in turns to do your daughter's bedtime routine, with a story and cuddles. Then, when your daughter comes into your bed, as soon as you realise she's there return her to her own bed. Say very little, scoop her up gently and lead her back to her own bed.

You may have to do this a number of times but stand firm. Give lots of praise when she has a good night. A star chart is a good incentive for children of this age.
