  • How to improve his sperm quality?

  • Q: I have been trying to conceive for 10 months now. My partner received his sperm test results today and the results showed 'abnormal forms', which means the sperm are an abnormal shape, making it hard for them to fertilise the egg. Can we improve his sperm quality?

GP Rob says: For the best chance of healthy sperm, a man shouldn't smoke or use recreational drugs. Ideally he should also refrain from consuming alcohol, or keep consumption to a minimum.

Eating healthily is imortant, as sperm need vitamins A, C and E, and the minerals zinc and selenium if they are to develop properly. Folic acid is also important to help the testes produce normally formed sperm.

Regular exercise will help him maintain a healthy weight and is a great stress-buster - high levels of stress are thought to detrimentally affect sperm production.

It's a good idea to keep the scrotum cool by wearing loose-fitting underwear and not sitting for long periods of time.
