  • How often should I feed my newborn baby?

  • Q I don’t know how often to feed my new baby. Some say every time he cries, others say three- or four-hourly.

Health Visitor Dawn replies: Whether you're breast or bottlefeeding, in the early weeks it's best to feed on demand, although this doesn't mean every few minutes.

Try to let him go at least two hours between each feed, that's two hours from the start of one feed to the start of the next.

After a while lengthen this period to three to four hours. At this stage, make sure you don't let him go longer than five hours between feeds, even during the night.
