  • He wants our bedroom back

  • Q My husband wants our new baby daughter to move into her own bedroom even though I feel she's nowhere near ready. I'm finding this even more upsetting because I often felt rejected when I was a child and so am really keen to forge a close relationship with my daughter. We can't seem to agree on this, and the more strongly I say no, the more he presses me.

Therapist Lesley replies: It sounds as if you feel you're being pushed into making a choice between your husband and your daughter. It also sounds as though your husband is anxious abou this decision and is feeling vulnerable.

You say that you felt very shut out as a child and are determined to nurture your daughter better. This is understandable, but what seems to be happening here is that your husband is finding himself frozen out - rather as you felt as a little girl. I think if both of you could understand where his desperate need to have you to himself and your fierce opposition come from, you might ease the strain and sense of urgency.

There is no obvious right or wrong to this issue but what need to be talked about is how afraid you both seem to be that someone will be painfully rejected.
