  • He’s really changed

  • Q I’m 14 weeks pregnant and though we didn’t plan this, I do want the baby. Sometimes I feel really happy but other times I’m weepy and depressed. My main problem is my partner is unsympathetic, cold and irritable. He only wants to talk about practical things to do with the baby, such as what equipment we’ll need. When I talk about my feelings, he backs off as though I’m insane. What can I do?

Therapist Lesley replies: Pregnancy puts you under stress as a couple, whatever your relationship was like before. It's a time when, more than ever, you'll need to share your feelings, yet this can seem extra difficult because suddenly it can feel as though you're on different planets. He might see you as unpredictable, highly strung and wonder what's become of the sensible woman he used to know. You may feel he's being distant when perhaps he's also feeling afraid and a little bit isolated. Sometimes men find it hard to justify talking about their own feelings about the baby because they aren't the ones who are actually pregnant, but it's a transition for them, too. Talking to other couples who are expecting or have had babies may help you to share worries.
