Does high blood pressure matter?

Women with high blood pressure are usually cared for by an obstetrician with expertise in this area, and your doctor may recommend you see the obstetrician before you fall pregnant to establish a treatment plan.

High blood pressure increases the risk of problems for both mother and baby, which is why it needs to be closely monitored in pregnancy. Complications can include pre-eclampsia, poor baby growth in the womb and premature birth.

If your blood pressure is not too high, you may not need to take your medication during the first half of your pregnancy, as blood pressure naturally falls at this time.
