  • Dealing with bad toddler behaviour

  • For six months now, my 3-year-old son has been behaving badly. He's started soiling himself, talks back and won't listen. He doesn't eat much, and isn't gaining weight. The doctor says he's fine, but I am at my wit's end.

Child psychologist Laverne Antrobus says: Have there been any big changes in your lives over this time? Bad behaviour can often be a child's way of telling you that something is troubling them. If he has an accident, stay calm and put him in some dry clothes. Your son is a brilliant age for hugs and stickers when he behaves well, but he needs to know you don't like him talking back. Explain and use time out (three minutes on a chair). He will learn the consequences, and it lets you calm down. When it comes to his eating, many children prefer to graze, rather than have big meals, but if you're worried go back to your GP.
