  • Confused about dummies

  • Q My baby’s difficult to settle so I use a dummy to calm her down – is this okay?

Psychologist Laverne replies: If you're happy and they work for you
- then go for it. However, I'd also advise you to be clear about why you're using them. They should be used in a limited way, for settling or calming a distressed baby. It's also good to have an age in mind when you'd like to stop using a dummy. Babies also respond to the comfort that their parents can give them, so always be confident that a cuddle is equally valuable and will help her realise she can seek reassurance from you.
