  • Can I eat black pudding?

  • Q: Is it safe for me to eat black pudding as part of a cooked breakfast while I'm pregnant?

Nutritionist Caroline says: Yes. Traditiional UK black pudding is a cooked sausage made from pork fat, cereal or oatmeal, seasonings and blood, usually from pigs. People often confuse it with pate or liver sausage, but it's not the same. But do check the sell-by date, store it in the fridge and make sure you serve it piping hot.

During pregnancy, you should avoid liver sausage, beacsue of its high vitamin A content, and all types of pate because of the small risk of contracting listeriosis, which can be harmful to your unborn baby.
