  • Are plastic pots safe to use for baby food?

  • My sister says that plastic containers are not safe to be used for babies and toddlers as they can leak chemicals. She thinks the main problem is if they are heated. I freeze and reheat a lot of food in plastic containers, so I’m concerned. Any advice?

GP Dr Rob Hicks says: This relates to a chemical called bisphenol-A (BPA), which is used in the manufacture of plastic.

The worry is that it may leak from plastic products into food and drink if heated or damaged, subsequently posing a health risk by interacting with our hormone systems.

The view of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US and the Food Standards Agency (FSA) in the UK, is that there is still no conclusive evidence of a link between harmful effects on human health and exposure to these chemicals.

However, experts acknowledge that more research into the issue is needed.

Some parents may choose to continue using plastic products as usual, or to use only BPA-free products, which are labelled, or not to use plastic products at all.

Discarding damaged or old plastic products is sensible, as BPA is more likely to leak from the plastic with increased use and age.

With regards to reheating, it’s simple enough to do this in non-plastic containers.
